Introduction to Porto Tour

Get acquainted with Porto

The Finer Details
Join us on this 3-hour walking tour of Porto for a journey through the city's historic center. In the company of a historian, architect, or local expert, we will take in some of the best-known sites in the charmed cobbled streets of Porto. We’ll also soak up some lesser-spotted ones, too, and our small group allows us to dive off down medieval alleys, all the while discovering more about Porto’s fascinating past.

Tour Description

We'll dig into the history of Porto, the city that gave Portugal its name. From the Celtic settlements and the Roman shore of Portus Cale to the rise of the Iberian Kingdoms, Porto has always been a symbol of strength and independence. The Age of Discoveries saw the city thrive as a maritime hub, while the Baroque brought opulence to its churches and marked the growth of Porto's wine exportation. A symbol of resistance during the Liberal Wars of the 1800s, Porto earned the title of Invicta (never conquered), which it still uses as an emblem of its identity.

We’ll begin in a quiet square just behind the Town Hall in the heart of downtown Porto. From the setting of a 19th-century church facade, our guide will introduce themselves and get acquainted with the group to discover our historical interests from this calm setting.

From here, we will have the opportunity to explore the most iconic buildings and neighbourhoods of Porto, including the central promenade of Avenida dos Aliados, the commercial areas of Galerias de Paris and Santa Catarina, the 1400s Jewish quarter, and the ancient neighbourhoods of Sé (hilltop) and Ribeira (riverfront). Alongside our expert guide, we will visit some of these landmarks: the bustling 19th-century Bolhão Fresh Market; the white-and-blue tiled São Bento Train Station; the iconic Baroque Clérigos Church and Tower; the famous Lello Bookshop, beloved by Harry Potter fans; and the castle-like Cathedral. We may also have the chance to enter one of several historical cafés, such as the stunning 1920s Majestic Café or the charming Imperial Café, featuring impressive stained glass and chandeliers. At the end of your tour, you can choose to cross the 1800s Luis Bridge and have a panoramic view of Porto from the other side of the river.

We’ll leave better acquainted with Porto and with a deeper understanding of the city’s development. Our guide will ensure we are well-equipped with recommendations for how best to explore the city further.

We had a 3 hour historical tour of Porto with Andre through Context Travel today, and it was truly exceptional. My wife and I have traveled extensively throughout Europe over the past 25 years and have participated in historical and culinary tours in many major cities, and without hesitation, we can say this was one of the finest & most memorable tours we have ever experienced. Andre’s knowledge of Porto’s history and culture was outstanding. He presented the information in a thoughtful, engaging, and highly memorable way, making the city’s rich history come alive. The pace of the tour was perfect, allowing ample time to appreciate each stop without ever feeling rushed. He customized the tour for us with a few added food and wine tastings per our request, which was incredibly thoughtful & accommodating. Andre introduced us to unique local establishments that we likely would never have discovered on our own, and his insider stories & recommendations were incredible! We highly recommend Context Travel’s tours in Porto, and we would specifically encourage anyone booking a tour to request Andre. He is a wonderful guide and made our visit to Porto unforgettable.

Porto Through an Architect’s Eyes: A Tour That Changes How You See the City Jelena Savic is not your average tour guide, and this is not your average walking tour. Leading us from the grand City Hall through the storied Ribeira district, Jelena brought Porto to life with the depth and precision that only an architect could offer. Her insights into the design of the city’s buildings and monuments went far beyond the surface, revealing layers of history, intention, and artistry that most visitors simply walk past without a second glance. A particular highlight was her revelation of the hidden mason’s signatures tucked into the intricate patterns of Porto’s famously beautiful paving tiles — the kind of detail that makes you look at the ground beneath your feet in an entirely new way. Throughout the tour, Jelena proved to be a genuine wealth of knowledge, weaving together history, architecture, and culture as we wandered through some of Porto’s most captivating streets and spaces — including, memorably, what may genuinely be the best-looking Taco Bell in existence. Her enthusiasm is infectious, her expertise is impressive, and her ability to make complex architectural and historical context both accessible and fascinating is a rare gift. If you want to truly understand Porto — not just see it — a tour with Jelena is an absolute must. Highest recommendation.
