Ich bin ein Münchener: Kempinski Partnership Tour

The Finer Details
Your tour will start in the lobby of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, which was opened in 1858 by the Bavarian Royal Family in the heart of the city. The lobby is sometimes known as “Munich’s living room” and is where local families often come to celebrate big occasions from birthdays to graduations. Local tradition in a historical setting.

A fitting place to start a tour which will introduce you to what it means to be a local - a Münchener - in this most historical of cities. You  will start with a walk through the 19th century city as its rulers accumulated more wealth and influence and wanted to translate this into institutions which still shape people’s lives in the city. From the Hofgarten to the Opera House, you will walk through landmarks defined by history but still used by Münchener.

After this introduction, you will head back across Maximilianstraße and into the old medieval city of Munich. You will learn about the development of Munich from being a small monastic community to the seat of the most powerful family in Bavaria. You will spend time in its atmospheric market, the Viktualienmarkt, learning not just about its history but also why so many Münchener still come here to do their shopping or meet friends for a casual beer or bite to eat.

Finally you will make your way back to the hotel, taking in one of the most important sights in the city - the Hofbräuhaus. Beer is as essential to Munich as wine is to Bordeaux and your final leg of the tour will think about the huge industry that Bavarian beer has become - but why locals still love it so much.

The whole time you will be accompanied by a Münchener who will help you understand their version of the city. This is a place with many faces and complex layers of history. Your Context Expert will help reveal how the history shapes the culture of the city, and transforms it into a living, breathing modern city.
